Night view of a desert landscape with rocky formations under a star-filled sky and the Milky Way galaxy overhead.

I didn’t think I was going to get this shot initially because of a thick layer clouds that stubbornly refused to move off. Finally around 11:00pm, with the clouds still overhead, I decided to hike out to my shooting spot hoping it would clear. Thankfully it did, and a 30% crescent moon was enough to light the alien landscape. The retreating clouds can be seen in the middle right portions of the image. This photo also took first place honors in the experienced/professional category at the Dahl Mountain Photo Exhibition in Rapid City, South Dakota. Shot at Badlands National Park in South Dakota.
