This is probably one of the most photographed waterfalls in Spearfish Canyon, but what made the image unique on this day was the early spring foliage on the surrounding trees. The vibrant green of the leaves almost gave them a metallic appearance, and when I processed the photograph in black and white, the silvery contrast made a perfect frame for the falls.
-Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota
In another product description of the same location, I called this one of the most photographed waterfalls in the Black Hills. However, what makes this image unique is the early, heavy wet snow that clung to the tree branches, twigs and brush. A rare photographic opportunity indeed.

I was having problems sleeping one night, so I got up to read a bit and was notified on my aurora app that there was strong aurora activity in my area. Glancing out our picture window I could clearly see the tell tale red, orange and yellow colors streaking the northern sky, so I thought - why not. Wondering all the while if the light show would be over by the time I got there, I threw on some sweat clothes and slipped on my muck boots and headed to a location where I always wanted to capture a bright aurora. It turned out I wasn’t too late, but just in time.
-Owl Creek, Belle Fourche, South Dakota
Very rarely do we experience such calm conditions on the South Dakota plains, but on this morning it was so still I could hear the frogs croaking on the other side of the lake. I returned to this location several times since the dead reeds made a good foreground subject, but the water was just too choppy. But patience paid off in the end when I captured these mirror like reflections.
-Bear Butte and Bear Butte Lake near Sturgis, South Dakota
It was a bitterly cold winter morning with wind chills well below zero when this image was made. The old barn isn’t much for keeping out the cold, and I wondered how long it might be before mother nature completely consumes it, but on this day is stood strong with a snowy Bear Butte Mountain in the background.
